Chess Online Server

With introduction of computer technology opened many exciting doors for avid chess players. As computing technology became more and more sophisticated, chess programs were introduced. With that, artificial intelligence (AI) programs were created that allow a computer to play and simulate a chess strategy. In addition, computer technology improved the way we communicate with each other, allowing for friends living long distances away to conveniently play chess online. Gone are the old days of people tediously setting up a game to play chess over the phone or via snail mail. With new technology today, there are many servers that allow millions of users to play chess with a new opponent every day.

Chess (Western chess) is a board game that is played between two players with a chess board. The chessboard is square-shaped and contains 64 squares arranged on an 8 by 8 grid. Each player during a chess match starts with sixteen different pieces. Each player has one king and queen, two rooks, knights, and bishops, and eight pawns. Every unique piece on a chess board has unique ways of traveling up and down the chessboard. Both player in a game of chess has the goal of using the pieces to checkmate the opponent’s king. This means that the king is under attack, and there is no possible move that will deem the king safe from the attack. If a king is in check, it means it is being attacked, but there is a move that will keep it safe, either by moving the king or another piece to block the attack.

History of Programs Allowing Users to Play Chess Online:
The first program allowing users to play chess remotely was the PLATO system based program called “chess3″. This program was very obscure and unknown to the public because it did not use the internet in a traditional sense, and most games played under this system took days to complete. Email was another novel way to play chess in 1980s, but the internet had not yet taken off, and was not yet a viable alternative to other forms of corresponding chess via long distances. Eventually, the first chess server similar to chess servers today was created in 1992 at the University of Utah. It was called the Internet chess server, and allowed users to play chess online for free, but was later commercialized, charging its users for membership.

Online Chess Servers Today:
Today, chess servers and communities are prevalent over the internet and many of them allow users to play chess online for free. The Free Internet Chess Server was created from the creators of the original Internet chess server, as a way of countering the commercial nature of it. The Internet Chess Club is the largest server for users to play chess over the internet, but there are many others, such as Yahoo! Games, Playchess, and Chess Boss.
