Chess is a board game that is played between two players with a chess board. The chessboard is square-shaped and contains 64 squares arranged on an 8 by 8 grid. Each player during a chess match starts with sixteen different pieces. Each player has one king and queen, two rooks, knights, and bishops, and eight pawns. Every unique piece on a chess board has unique ways of traveling up and down the chessboard. Both player in a game of chess has the goal of using the pieces to checkmate the opponent’s king. This means that the king is under attack, and there is no possible move that will deem the king safe from the attack. If a king is in check, it means it is being attacked, but there is a move that will keep it safe, either by moving the king or another piece to block the attack.

With the emergence of computer technology came the chess engine. A chess engine is simply a computer program that is capable of playing chess. They are programs written that calculate moves and select the best one for the given situation. Over the years, chess engines have become more powerful and more challenging as computer processing technology has improved over the years. This is because more computing power allows for more calculations to be made at a given time. With better artificial intelligence, computer chess engines are able to be more selective in their decision as well, allowing for advanced strategies and moves.

In the early part of the 1990s, only supercomputers were capable of competing with the best human chess masters. This is because regular consumer computers just did not have the ability to calculate moves far enough ahead, nor were they able to think critically for evaluating strategies as games progressed. This is during the time period when supercomputers were built with the sole purpose of competing against the best chess players in the world. With the rapid improvement of technology, however, came more sophisticated consumer computers, allowing many companies to write their own chess engines. Today, hundreds of chess downloads exist throughout the internet that have their own coded chess engines.

Chess downloads on the internet generally provide users with varying levels of skilled chess engines, testing the strategy and know how of human chess players. While many chess downloads are free, many websites charge money for them. These are typically chess downloads that are more advanced and require a great deal of resources to program.

A chess download does not always contain computer chess intelligence. Rather, some chess downloads instead require two human players to link up with one another to play what is called “corresponding chess” games with each other. These are basically games where two players play over a long distance. Other chess downloads provide strategies for players that are learning advanced chess techniques and they act as a coach. Entering a simple Google search for chess downloads will show plenty of results in which a person may find useful.
